A GIRL, A DREAM, A REALITY

Aloha, my name is Esther Chan, and I am the founder of Cyber Safe Seniors. This initiative was shaped out of my passion for STEM, the growing need for education in cybersecurity, and my desire to create positive change. But most of all, Cyber Safe Seniors was forged from a dream, a dream of a safer internet for a world that is becoming increasingly dependent on technology.

While undergoing extensive research on cybercrime, I was very upset to find that trusting and innocent older adults were disproportionately at risk for being exploited and taken advantage of online. The more I learned about the topic, the more I knew I needed to take action. Girl Scouts of Hawaii provided me the perfect chance for me to turn my dream into reality: the Girl Scout Gold Award.

Since our beginnings in early 2021, Cyber Safe Seniors has continued to expand. My team and I have created a complete cybersecurity course for seniors called CyberSafety 101, and have reached kūpuna across the state through partnerships with with local senior care homes, AARP Hawaii, and the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center (the largest senior center in the state). Our initiative has been recognized by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Hawaii State Legislature, and Prudential Financial through the national Prudential Emerging Visionaries Award.

Our mission at Cyber Safe Seniors is to teach kÅ«puna about cybersecurity and inspire them to pursue a healthy digital lifestyle. We acknowledge that it's difficult to learn something new, but we also believe that with resources, motivation, and hard work, it's 100% possible– and we're here to make that happen. We're here to make your cyber dreams your reality.

All the best,

Esther Chan
